Despite the best efforts of all, legislation has been passed in Dáil Eireann which allows abortions to be carried out in Ireland up to twelve weeks’ gestation without any clinical reason required. Abortion after twelve weeks is now legal under certain circumstance.
The legislation further compels doctors who object in conscience to performing or participating in an abortion, to nevertheless make arrangements for the abortion to take place as soon as possible.
Doctors for Life will continue to uphold the principle of the right to life of every human being from conception to natural death and we encourage all doctors and health care professionals who have a conscientious commitment to life to remain firm in the defense of their patients, no matter how young, no matter how old, no matter how ill.
It is our intention to work for future amendments to the legislation that will honour true conscientious commitment in healthcare. We salute all those who endeavour to help women in crisis pregnancies and their unborn babies and we will continue to support them. We are grateful for everyone who supported the work of Doctors for Life in 2018.
Doctors for Life will remain steadfast in upholding the practice of medicine as a service to human life at all stages. Above all, we will provide continuing support for doctors and other healthcare workers who wish their skills to be used to heal and to protect life.
